How do domain names work?
Domain names are well-known names for URLs or Internet unique identifiers.
Domain names work in the same way as physical addresses do in the real world: IP addresses are identified by domain names. The IP address, like the address on a letter you’d send in the mail, tells computers where websites are on a network.
ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, assigns domain names. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the official regulatory body that oversees the use of domain names. The fundamental objective of ICANN is to ensure that every domain has a URL and that each domain has its own IP address.
The owner of a domain name must renew it every year (registrant). This charge is paid to a registrar, such as NameBright.com, who serves as a go-between between domain owners and ICANN.
Registrars must follow ICANN standards and attempt to contact the registrant if registration fees are not paid. If the registrant does not reply to the alerts, the domain name goes through an expiration procedure, after which ICANN makes the domain available for purchase on the open market.
The difference between the domain names, websites, and web hosting:
It’s common to confuse a domain name with a website. They’re linked, but they’re not the same thing.
- A domain name is similar to your home’s address. It just directs visitors to your location.
- Websites are made up of the code and material you create.
- A web host is a technical service that allows your website to be seen on the Internet.
